Values and Politics

In the Politics and Values community, a group of students has the chance to discover these concerns while living and studying together in an intensive year-long course. Politics and Values fulfills a number of needs for both Columbian College and Elliott School students. However more importantly, the course encourages elite-level intellectual growth in a small-class atmosphere. We engage exclusively with primary texts, reading classic functions from Aristotle towards the present day (including four Nobel Prize winners), with significant faculty interaction to guide students via interpreting these difficult texts. And we implement these suggestions to contemporary issues, writing research papers that combine theory and practice. Throughout the fall semester, we look hard money lenders at the ancient view that states exist to mold good men; the early contemporary view that states create their very own correct and wrong; the founding American view that states should tolerate and respect the different value-orientations of their individual citizens; the skepticism of modern political science concerning the project of democratic values; and Supreme Court cases that address a few of the most difficult questions about values and rights. In the spring, they look in the connection of values with cultures and nations; the problems of national and ethnic violence; conventional political science theories concerning the causes of war; the religious, moral and political origins in the present conflict in between the West and Islam; international attempts to microdermabrasion machines control violence and create boundary-crossing values; and also the values that underlie our efforts to encourage development in poor areas of the world. Politics and Values is writing intensive. Before Thanksgiving of their freshman year, students are asked to write a high-quality 25-page paper concerning the change in the idea of liberty from Aristotle to Machiavelli to John Locke and James Madison. Some freshmen in the country can boast of such success. Working closely using the professor (and a TA devoted to giving writing instruction), students develop this paper piece-by-piece, revising each section as they go. Politics and Values students are kept together in Thurston Hall. As they live and grow together, they have the opportunity to develop leadership skills within their own community, to encourage each other to work difficult and think deeply, metal detector and to enjoy all the social choices that GW has to offer. Politics and Values students also interact using the Washington policy community. In the past, for example, they have heard scholars from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum speak about contemporary genocides, talked with high-level staffers from Congress concerning the educational preparation needed for a career on the Hill, visited sessions in the U.S. Supreme Court, and toured DC’s monuments to learn about the belief behind the architecture.
